Columbia Pictures recently announced that they are currently developing a new movie adaptation of "Jumanji," KpopStarz reports. Columbia Pictures' film producer, Douglas Belgrad, announced it during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Belgrad said that the idea behind remaking the supernatural adventure film is to "try and reimagine 'Jumanji' and update it for the present.

There are reports claiming that Zac Helm will be writing the new "Jumanji" movie while Matt Tolmach and Bill Teitler are set to be the producers for the project.

The movie was based on Chris Van Allsburg's award-winning illustrated children's game board book with the same name in 1981. It tells the story of an adult who was trapped inside the world of the mysterious board game. The book was adapted into a movie on 1995.

The movie starred the late Robin Williams along with the then young Kirsten Dunst. "Jumanji" was directed Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III and Captain America). It grossed $263 million in theaters. The popularity of the movie also led to the creation of a board game spinoff and an animate series.

No official announcement regarding the cast has been made yet. The sudden demise of the original cast, Robin Williams, may affect the upcoming film remake.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that "Guardians of the Galaxy" star Karen Gillan will be part of the cast of the new "Jumanji" movie. The Scottish actress took to Twitter months ago, giving the Twitter community a hint on her possible casting on the movie. The 28-year-old Gillan posted an image of the board game with a caption that read, "Things are really happening for me."

In other news, "Jumanji's" original cast Robin Williams died of suspected suicide on August 11. The 63-year old actor was found "unconscious and not breathing" Monday inside his home in Tuburon, California. Williams was pronounced dead at 12:02 p.m. following the arrival of an emergency personnel.

An investigation is currently conducted to identify the cause of the death. However, it was reported that the sheriff's Office Coroner Division suspects it was a case of suicide due to asphyxia.
