Goolge will reportedly replace its Nexus program with a new Android system called Silver. Whereas Nexus devices offered a "pure" Android experience, the Silver program is intended to bring more of what Google wants people to experience with its mobile operating system. The approached will be more tailored. Likewise, it appears Google wants to compete with custom UIs like HTC's Sense and Samsung's TouchWiz. Can Google pull it off? 

According to a report by Phandroid, the internet giant has been shifting its focus wanting to create a more coherent ecosystem than before. Throughout the years, the Google Play Edition and Nexus programs concentrated on offering "pure" Android experience. The programs run via the Android Open Source Project or the AOSP. 

Once Google released the Android 4.4 KitKat and Nexus 5, the market saw a different Google approach. These releases meant Google wants to tailor components of the Android operating system more. The KitKat update featured Google's version of the Google Dialer and the Google Now launcher. People can see more how the tech giant wants its applications and overall operating system experience to be. 

Through the Android Open Source Project, the company's hardware and software partners work to develop the Android source code.  After development of the code, partners are given access to it. Involved parties can change or tailor the code according to their products and services. OEMs can also tailor the code in line with their promotions and intended user experience. This creates the fragmentation. 

Google's Android Silver Program will tackle this problem. According to reports, Google will use the Silver program to create a more organized ecosystem for Android. Some of the changes Google will make include the home screen, Chrome and Search integration for Android, notification shade and Google Launcher among others. 

Google has not made any official announcements yet. The company's I/O Conference is just around the corner. It may serve as venue for Google to provide more details.
