German firm Biozoon is designing a 3D-printed food extruder that makes food suitable for elderly patients who are unable to swallow. The food created by the device melts inside the mouth to prevent choking, according to TechCrunch.

The food extruder is called SeneoPro and will be available within this year. Users can mold and customize the products, and can even mix in colorants and texturizers to give the look and taste of real food, the report explained.

Biozoon's website describes the product: "The powder mixtures of seneoPro series enable universal implementation so that both family caregivers and professional cooks and nurses can easily make the new diets. Appetizers, main dishes, desserts and snacks can now custom fit, balanced and also be made visually appealing above all things. A food with all your senses, pleasure and enjoyment is possible again, a structured daily functioning can be restored."

SeneoPro uses molecular gastronomy to produce 3D-printed food which is completely edible. However, the food quickly melts inside the mouth once eaten. More than half of elderly patients have dysphagia, or inability to swallow. Using this technology, SeneoPro could help prevent food aspiration and therefore save lives of more elderly people, TechCrunch reported.
