Shanghai Media acquires South Korean variety show

Chinese entertainment and broadcasting firm Shanghai Media Group has recently purchased the rights to remake "Grandpas Over Flowers," a famous 2013 variety show launched in South Korea, according to Yahoo Entertainment. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed in the said report.

According to a representative of the TV station that airs the show, both parties have inked a deal for the Chinese remake of "Grandpas Over Flowers." The two media firms are eyeing mainland China as the locale of the shooting for the show's new version. With regards to the cast and the crew in China, the matter is still unconfirmed, the report added.

The unnamed rep also said: "We will not only give the rights to Shanghai Media Group to produce their own version, but will also share our secret in producing a successful reality show."

"Grandpas Over Flowers" was directed by Na Young-suk. Veteran media artists Lee Soon-jae, Park Geun-hyung, Baek Il-seob, and Shing Goo are the main casts in the said program. The show raked in 75 million weekly viewers per episode. A movie, which will be released in 2014, was also made based on the show, Yahoo Entertainment reported.
