Credit Suisse star analyst Howard Chen is now an investment banker

Credit Suisse has announced that its well-respected and multi-awarded analyst, Howard Chen, will be moving to its Investment Banking Department. According to a memo, Chen will become the Managing Director and Global Head of Financial Technology and Financial Strategies. He will be leaving his current position as a Senior Analyst in the Equity Research Department. The appointment is effective immediately, Credit Suisse said. He will also be reporting to the Co-Head of the Financial Institutions Group for the America's region, Craig Stine.

According to the memo, which was shown in an article on The New York Times The Dealbook, Chen will be providing advice to clients like retail brokers, financial exchanges, institutional securities firms, financial exchanges, trust and custodial banks as well as providers of trading technology. He will also be working with David Goldstein and Brian Gudofsky, both of whom are leading the bank's Global Technology Services efforts, particularly on mobile payments, payments processing and financial software.

Chen will also lead a new initiative in the investment banking unit that will help clients, including alternative asset managers, to identify and take advantage of opportunities to expand and diversify their portfolios businesses and funding profiles. The memo said the initiative will draw on the expertise of the Investment Banking Division as the financial services landscape is reshaped with tighter capital requirements and new regulations.

For many years, institutional investor in the brokers, asset managers and exchanges sector have considered Chen as a top-ranked analyst, the memo said. He has led the bank's research coverage of US Capital Markets industry and has covered investment banks, trust banks, alternative asset managers, financial exchanges and retail brokerage firms.  

He has also received numerous accolades in other industry surveys. These include "Analysts of the Year" for 2013 by Bloomberg/Greenwich Associates and Financial Times/Starmine Survey "#7 Overall US Market Stock Picker in 2008.

According to the memo, Chen holds a BA from Yale University and started to work for Credit Suisse in 2001 as an Associate on the Multinational Bank and Brokerage team.
