Line, a Japan-based message app, announced that it has added another 100 million people to its registered user count in just four months, hitting over 300 million users globally, at a press conference today in Tokyo.

The company, founded back in 2011, began its journey by devising a series of cute sticker characters to try and attract a young user-base. Its growth rate began to accelerate rapidly from 100 million users on the 19th month, another six months to hit 200 million and another four months to hit a milestone of 300 million in total registered users.

Line Chief Executive Akira Morikawa stated that their target milestone for 2014 is 500 million registered users. According to TechCrunch, despite such impressive numbers, one needs to take note that these are registered users and not monthly active users. Which is more important to be able to measure its actual success of retaining users as well as engagement, the report added.

Other than stickers, Line also offers games for download on its platform. It announced today that global downloads across all its games have now passed over 220 million. Its main revenue stream is due to game-related payments, making up 60% of its total revenue.

Line announced that the app is currently being used in 230 countries and is ranked first in the free app category in 60 countries. It is also raking in nearly USD 100 million in revenue per quarter according to its official press release on their website. Its chief rivals are WeChat and WhatsApp.
