Taking the 2014 elections as the backdrop, President Barack Obama had made the government shutdown this month as an example of the differences between the Democrats and Republicans in an appeal made to campaign donors.

He made the remarks during a fundraiser at the home of Karen Mehiel held at the Upper East Side, New York City. He said, "The shutdown was about more than healthcare, it was about, sort of, a contrast in visions about what our obligations are to our fellow citizens."

Republicans had held up funding for the signature of the healthcare program as a pre-condition for the continuance of fund sources for the government operations. This impasse lead to a partial shutdown for sixteen days. This also brought the country to the brink of defaulting on its obligations.

He is hoping though that the Republicans, who control the House of Representatives, would be able to work with the President and the Democrats if he is hoping to pass the budget, the immigration reform or to pass any sort of legislation this year.
