MS Costa Concordia was said to be successfully lifted and freed from rocks after the January 2012 disaster. This was according to engineering officials in Italy who administered the salvage operation for the cruise ship. The efforts to take the ship up were among of the most daunting operations ever taken. The operations lasted through the night to lift Costa Concordia after 20 months after it ran aground.

Officials said the vessel had been detached from rocks. It was later on moved to a constructed platform on the sea bed. A total of thirty two people died during the incident off the Tuscan coast. However, bodies of the two people who died during the incident by the island of Giglio, Italy were never found. Immediate relatives were hopeful that their bodies would be recovered during the operation but officials said that there was no sign of dead bodies so far.

MS Consta Concordia was operated by Costa Crociere S.p.A. The latter is an Italian cruise line owned by a dual listed firm, Carnival Corporation & PLC. In 2012, Carnival received total revenue of USD15.3 billion. In the same year, the company had a net income valued USD1.2 billion.
