Rogers Communications Inc. is the largest wireless carrier in Canada. The company had ventured overseas to choose its new chief executive officer. Rogers named Guy Laurence as the new CEO of the Canadian wireless carrier. Laurence was a former executive at Vodafone Group Plc.

Laurence held a managing position in the UK division of Vodafone. He would replace Rogers' CEO Nadir Mohamed on December 2, according to a statement issued by the company today. Mohamed announced his planned departure from Rogers last January.

Guy Laurence would take the wheel at Rogers as the company had been trying to fend off faster growing wireless rivals. The Canadian government had also been encouraging fresh new competitors to come into the country. This presented another threat to the wireless company, according to a Bloomberg report. To be able to stay on top, Rogers Communications had increased its investment in sports programming. This gave the company more content to sell to smartphoe and digital TV subscribers.

Rogers shares dropped less than 1% to CND43.11 at 11:04 a.m. in Toronto today.
