Unofficial tallies today saw liberal pragmatist Bill De Blasio topping the NY mayoralty Democratic nomination at 40.2%. De Blasio needs over 40% of votes in order to secure his place as the Democratic candidate for the position of mayor of New York.

Should the official results show him scoring over 40% of the votes, De Blasio would pitted against Republican candidate Joe Lhota in the Novermber general election to clinch the New York mayoralty post. Lhota is the former chief of New York's transport agency.

As a former, little-known fourth placer in the Democratic race for the New York mayor position, his speeches that were heard as an implied attack to current mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg made his status jumped as a frontrunner candidate. If the official results have De Blasio with less than 40% however, he would still have to go to a second round of voting, of which he would have win over New York city former comptroller Bill Thompson before competing Lhota. Thompson came second with 26%.

The winner of the November elections would have him succeeding Bloomberg as mayor of the most populous yet powerful city in the whole world. One of the three world economy command centers. New York is home to Wall Street. It is also the largest regional economy in the US at USD1.28 trillion worth of gross metropolitan product (GMP) as per 2010.
