Silicon Valley startup Telepathy raised USD5 million in an initial round of funding. Telepathy would use the amount to make a wearable computing technology that could compete against Google Glass.

"Wearable technology will enable the next wave in social networking," Takahito Iguchi, chief executive officer of Telepathy, said in a statement. "The USD5 million funding will enable us to enrich the user experience of Telepathy One, which we expect to bring to market in 2014."

Telepathy said Firsthand Technology Value Fund headed the series-A venture capital. With the money, the Sunnyvale, California-based startup would be able to employ new hardware and software engineers. Peter Hoddie, vice president of Kinoma software platform and video compression creator of Marvell Semiconductor, already joined Telepathy's advisory board.

The company's Telepathy One headset prototype would be developed. Telepathy One was demonstrated earlier in 2013. The company showed that they have already designed a hands-free interaction device wrapped around the back of a user's head. Telepathy One was made with a small screen and earplugs. This fall, the device would get a developer kit so that programmers could make apps for it.
