After her recent surprise win at the center court of Wimbledon, Marion Bartoli surprised the tennis world by announcing her retirement from the sport. Her retirement, according to her  is 'effective immediately', a mere thirty-nine days after holding the Wimbledon trophy aloft.

Retirement has become a running drama, with recent spate of short playing histories in the women's game. Known greats such as Kim Clijsters, Martina Hingis and Justin Henin, all in their mid-twenties walking away from the game. While some tried to return to the game they left, only a few become competitive again after their 'retirement hiatus' from the game.

In an emotional interview with sports newspaper L'Equipe, Bartoli said that recurring injuries and pain was the main cause for her sudden decision. When asked if she would return, she responded by saying, "I'm not lie that. I won't come back. It's done."

As the fall out from the recent retirement decision of Bartoli, Wimbledon again had a banner year as the All England Club hosted the tennis tournament. For the prize money, the organizers had increased winnings by 40% to GBP 22.6 million or US$34.5 million. This was the largest increase that the tournament had in the history of the sport.
