Robin Hayes, former CEO of JetBlue, will now serve as the head of Airbus' North American operations.

After nine years at the helm, Hayes resigned as JetBlue's boss in February. Shortly after Jeff Knittel revealed his retirement on Monday, April 22, Hayes was announced to replace him as chairman and CEO of Airbus Americas.

Airbus to Dominate Market While Boeing is Embroiled in Crises

Appointing Hayes is crucial for Airbus as the European aircraft maker tries to reclaim the business while its American rival Boeing is facing a string of controversies.

According to CNN, Airbus recorded impressive yearly jet orders in 2023. Yet, in a press statement, CEO Guillaume Faury hinted at potential intentions for more growth in the North American market.

"Together with the leadership team we're looking forward to having Robin and his vast industry experience onboard to further deliver on our strategic objectives for the region across all the Airbus businesses and further grow our North American footprint."

Two months have passed since Hayes departed from JetBlue, which operates a fleet of Airbus aircraft. Hayes says he consults his doctor and talks to his wife before deciding. "The extraordinary challenges and pressure of this job have taken their toll. It's time I put more focus on my health and well-being," Hayes said in January, as reported by CNN.

After taking some time off, Hayes expressed his enthusiasm and positive attitude on Monday about joining Airbus.

"I am excited and energised to join Airbus and build on the incredible success in the region," Hayes stated. Airbus' commitment to safety and decarbonisation is incredibly important to me personally, and I am both motivated by and committed to contributing to Airbus' purpose to pioneer sustainable aerospace."

As chairman and CEO, Hayes will oversee the commercial aircraft division and coordinate the company's North American helicopter, space, and military operations.

According to the press release, the business has 50 locations in the region and employs almost 10,000 Airbus workers.
