According to the Nepal Telecommunications Authority, imports of telecom related equipment almost reached double the amount of last year. The NTA said that local companies expanded robustly in the country, prompting numerous upgrades and boosting the industry.

Almost NRS 8.54 billion worth of products were manufactured this year, according to the government agency. Last year, products created by Nepalese firms only amounted to NRS4.55 billion. Prior to importing these equipment, local firms must gain proper license from the NTA (which compiled the data) as per the country's Telecommunication Act of 1997.

The country's growing telecommunication industry prompted several foreign companies to make investments. Neighboring China's Huawei was recently given the green light for its mobile lines project. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority said that that Huwaei will be allowed to disperse its SIM cards after the company finishes its network preparation project in Kathmandu.

"We are installing new equipment at mobile towers in Kathmandu and the task will be finished in a month," noted NTA's spokesman Guna Keshari Pradhan.
