Government of the Philippines Urged to Do Something About It

Last year, a Bohol official urged the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources (DENR) to prevent the construction of resorts and other structures within the Chocolate Hills.

Bohol Provincial board member Jamie Aumenado Villamor said the DENR should help preserve the province's major tourist attraction.

"The DENR-PAMB, in consultation with stakeholders, must address the ambiguity of the rules and guidelines in the development and management of our protected areas to ensure long-term protection and conservation," she noted, as Inquirer reported.

Resolution No. 5, Series 2012, which guides the ecotourism development and management of the Chocolate Hills, private property owners near the hills are allowed to develop their land.

The main issue is that the resort was built in the middle of the Chocolate Hills. As of this writing, two controversial attractions are located in the heart of the landmark: the Bud Agta in Carmen town and the Captain's Peak Garden and Resort in Sagbayan town.

The Chocolate Hills in Bohol was declared the Philippines' first geopark by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).
