Dialysis products specialist Baxter International Inc. (BAX) earned conditional approval to purchase Sweden-based competitor Gambro AB from the European Union.

The second-largest manufacturer of dialysis products, Baxter International aims to expand kidney-support equipment business further.

The European Commission had been concerned that the deal's competitiveness in the world market had been reduced. However, Baxter International submitted commitments to the commission that resolved their hesitation.

To resolve competition issues, Baxter International decided to sell is Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CCRT) unit, which serves patients suffering from acute kidney failure, stated the email sent by the European Commission earlier today.

Baxter divested the entire business including employees, intellectual property, customer portfolio, product marketing authorizatons and supply agreement.

Previous investigation made by the European Commission discovered that the combined company would enjoy a high market share in a considerable number of European Union member states and would not be facing additional competitive constraints from fellow suppliers.
