General Motors Co. is reportedly pushing back to a year the commercial launch of its next-generation Chevrolet Cruze, a Reuters report said. Sources familiar to the deal stated that the initial target for the Cruze was in late 2014 but production is now more likely to begin in December 2015.

The Cruze has been performing well in terms of sales, after revenues were up 17% from January to June this year. In terms of US sales, it only trails Toyota's Camry.

The next version of the popular Cruze will feature a larger trunk as well as a roomy passenger compartment. It will also reportedly have a more efficient gallon-to-mile ratio.

GM wants to make sure it does not release the new Cruze prematurely and end up the same road as the Chevy Malibu. The car model suffered paltry sales after it was redesigned by the manufacturer.

Also, GM wants to take advantage of the popularity of the model to squeeze out more profits before starting production for the new Cruze.
