US hospitals speed digital record transition

Major steps are being taken by US hospitals as it switched to electronic health records from the conventional paper records. The stride was driven by an infusion of federal funding for the transition of hospital record documentation nationwide. This was reported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

The number of hospitals with basic electronic health records system increased to 44% in 2012. The increase was up by 17% compared last 2011. Hospitals that have change gone digital with their record keeping tripled since 2010. The report found out that these healthcare institutions received federal funds to initiate the change.

The move to shift to using electronic health records where pushed by the government to be able to cut down costs of healthcare. The transition would also allow improved quality of service as records are kept standardized. Clinics and doctors' clinics have also made significant progress with 38% percent increase in electronic record keeping in 2012.
