'Captain Marvel' is a planned standalone film for the Marvel character of the same name. The titular superheroine nearly made a debut on 'Jessica Jones' as a supporting character but was eventually replaced. Despite rumors of several actresses attached to the upcoming film, no official casting reports have been released as of the present.

According to Comic Book, Carol Danvers a.k.a. Captain Marvel was original slated to be introduced as a supporting character on the television show 'Jessica Jones' starring Krysten Ritter in the titular role. The Netflix web series serves as the follow-up to 'Daredevil' and is part of Marvel's attempt at connecting the movies' Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to Earth. It is the second in the series of shows that will eventually lead to Marvel's 'The Defenders' crossover miniseries.

The series' showrunner Melissa Rosenberg said that they originally intended for Captain Marvel to appear in 'Jessica Jones' but had to rethink those plans when the series moved to Netflix, according to Screen Rant.

Rosenberg said, "Back when it was at ABC Network, I did use Carol Danvers, but between then and when it ended up on Netflix, you know, the MCU shifted, and it also shifted away from the universe in the [comic] book. So in the book, the powers are very out in the open and the themes of that are about 'the other,' and in the cinematic universe that's not the mythology. So there was a lot that I had to move away from, just in terms of sheer plot, and Carol Danvers got her own movie."

Rosenberg added that the addition of the character Patsy Walker, played by Rachel Taylor, in replacement of Carol Danvers was a good move for the series saying that Patsy was a more "appropriate fit" as Jessica's best friend since she had no super powers.

Meanwhile, the upcoming action-adventure-fantasy film is yet to find its titular superheroine. Several actresses including Olivia Wilde, Sienna Miller, Charlize Theron, Rebecca Ferguson and Ronda Rousey had been name-dropped to play Captain Marvel in numerous fan casting articles such as the one on Inverse. No official reports have come up regarding official casting for Marvel's first female-centered standalone superhero film.

'Captain Marvel' is a planned superhero film based on the Marvel comic book character of the same name. Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve are attached to write the screenplay. The film is part of MCU's Phase Three and is scheduled to be released on March 8, 2019.
