Toshiba Corp announced on Tuesday of its plans to expand the production facility for its NAND flash memory chips which are used in smart phones and in memory cards. The facility is located in Yokkaichi which is situated in Central Japan. The construction is set to start in August with a target completion in the summer of 2014.

Toshiba estimated that they will invest around Y30 Billion, converted would be around $30 million for the expansion that they have in mind for their Japan Factory.

Incoming Toshiba President Hisao Tanaka flagged the possibility of the expansion due to the demand for chips used in memory cards and smart phones. The demand for NAND chips picked up early this year due to the continuous clamor for smart phones and memory cards. The seen weakness of the Yen pushed the competitive streak of Toshiba against its industry rival, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.
