Madewell, a smaller J. Crew brand, recalled 50,600 pairs of sandals that were sold online in Canada and the US. The recall was done because a metal shank from the inside of the shoe can dislodge and come out of the bottom of the outsole. When this happens, it could pose a fall hazard for the wearer.

It is unlikely for adult apparel to be recalled from the market because of its potential hazard but customers of the said shoes have complained of these potentially unsafe metal shank and the shoes are also uncomfortable to use.

As of now, there were only eight reports of the metal shanks coming off and getting through the bottom of the outsole. Fortunately, there are no injuries related to the incident were reported.

The recall applies only to all sizes and colors of particular styles. The shoes, manufactured in China, were sold online at shopbop.com and the Madewell website. They were sold between February and July of this year for $60 to $80. There were 300 pairs sold in Canada and around 50,600 in the US.

Madewell and the Consumer Product Safety Commission advise customers to stop using the shoes included in the recall and return it to the store for a full refund. Customers will also be given a different shipping email with a free shipping sticker from the UPS within 1-2 days for free returns of the sandals.

Madewell told Consumerist that they take product safety seriously and are working aggressively to resolve the issue and add extra precautions in order to make sure that the incident does not occur again.
