Apple Inc. has acquired WifiSlam, a startup in Silicon Valley that creates mapping applications for smart phones.

WifiSlam is a developer of technology that offers indoor tracking and the like. Apple has been competing with Google to offer better map applications for consumers. The Google Maps application is widely used on Android platform and on rival iOS.

A spokesman for Apple told Reuters that Apple has been purchasing smaller technology firms from time to time but commits to not disclosing its purpose and goals.

Apple confirmed the acquisition of the Silicon Valley startup but did not provide further information.

A person familiar with the deal was quoted by The Wall Street Journal saying that Apple acquired WifiSlam for around $20 million.
