Captain Marvel is something people have been asking for for an incredibly long time- a Marvel superhero movie with a female character in the lead role. Now, they're getting one- Captain Marvel will release in 2018- but they almst got one far sooner than anyone thought. And while the recent news of Captain Marvel seemed to indicate she wouldn't be appearing in Avengers: Age of Ultron, could that just be a fake-out tactic by Marvel Studios? It's entirely possible, given how late in the game director Joss Whedon included a scene of the Avengers eating Schwarma in the first Avengers film.

Captain Marvel is Carol Danvers, a Marvel Comics character known as Ms. Marvel for many years before becoming Captain Marvel officially in 2012 and joining the Avengers. So far, there have been no official cast announcements for the film, although Natalie Dormer and Gwendoline Christie (both from HBO's Game of Thrones) have been rumored for parts and are the general fan-favorites to get the role. Emily Blunt is also a major fan pick for the part.

Recently, Captain Marvel officially landed its screenwriters: Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. Perlman recently came off last summer's Guardians of the Galaxy, which she co-wrote with director James Gunn, while LeFauve wrote this summer's Inside Out, a Pixar film featuring Amy Poehler.

While there's no director on board yet for Captain Marvel, several names have been thrown around for the part. Angelina Jolie is the current front-runner, if rumors can be believed, and Joss Whedon has officialy taken himself out of the running.

Here's what we do know, though. According to ScienceFiction.com, Captain Marvel was in one of the original drafts for Avengers: Age of Ultron, before being removed and replaced with Scarlet Witch. According to Kevin Feige:

"[Captain Marvel] was in a draft. But to me, it would have done that character a disservice, to meet her fully formed, in a costume and part of the Avengers already when 99% of the audience would go, 'Who is that?' It's just not the way we've done it before."

Could she still show up? You'll have to find out for yourself in Avengers: Age of Ultron, which premieres on May 1, 2015.
