Imagine knowing your contacts' activities on WhatsApp. A recent post on Android Pit warns WhatsApp users of an application that tracks their activity on the said application. WhatsDog has been described as the site as a "Creepy, but cool?" app that records login data from WhatsApp, allowing users to track their contacts' activity at any given period.

Features and Installation

According to Android Pit, WhatsDog's primary feature is to show a WhatsApp contact's online-offline data. Other features include a calendar that lets users see what their contacts have been up to on any given day; a chart that monitors the level of WhatsApp usage every 24 hours, week, or month; and the settings menu that lets users select what information to track and when to receive notifications for WhatsApp contacts being monitored.

Setting up the app to track a user is very easy as well. Simply install the WhatsDog APK, open the app and choose the contact to be monitored by typing in their phone number. The app will activate the service and start tracking that user's activity immediately.

Not the First Spying App on the Market

WhatsDog isn't the first app to monitor WhatsApp users' activity, and it isn't the worst in the market either. ZealSpy, for example, does more than record a user's login/logout information and usage statistics. It also allows users to access chat logs, SMS messages, calendar events, emails and browser history.

This isn't the first time WhatsApp made headlines for privacy-related issues as well. Earlier this year, Business Insider reported a WhatsApp security issue that grants third parties access to the application's entire message database. In 2013, another security issue was reported which allows hackers to interpret WhatsApp's message encoding system because they use the same system for incoming and outgoing messages. Business Insider recommended reading permissions for apps similar to WhatsApp before installing to avoid security breach problems in the future.
