WhatsApp, a messenger app for smartphones, experienced server failure last Saturday. This was after few days that social media giant Facebook announced its intended purchase of the messenger app for USD19 billion. The server failure caused users to transfer to other rival messenger apps, said a NewYorker report.

WhatsApp caters to sixty five million users worldwide. Last Saturday, the messenger's server went down for two hundred and ten minutes, according to a NewYorker report. This made two of WhatsApp's rivals gain more users from around the world. Telegram, one of the biggest competitors of the messenger app, gained five million new users. Meanwhile, Line, another WhatsApp rival, gained two million new users. The three hours and a half server shut down was more than enough to cause major damage, continued the report.

Social messaging app Telegram is already known in the US as its features are entirely the same with that of WhatsApp. Meanwhile, Line, a popular messenger app in Japan, gained a lot of attention after the server outage.
