Patreon gathers US$2.1 million

Patreon Inc. anounced that it had secured around US$2.1 million in financing. The financing round were led by venture firms. These venture firms included Freestyle Capital, Atlas Venture, Charles River Ventures, SV Angel, and Rothenberg Ventures. The start-up received funds from angel funding from investors including Garry Tan, Tyler Willis, and Alexis Ohanian, a Reddit Co-Founder.

To become a patron of the arts, as Patreon would have it, the site allows fans to donate as little as US$1 to one of Patreon's 2,300 artists who have registered with Patreon. The firm is currently processes approximately US$100,000 of committments a month on behalf of its artists.

"We originally had musicians and YouTube creators in mind, but it's become a tool for anybody who's creating stuff. There are all sorts of communities using Patreon that I had no idea existed," Jack Conte, co-founder of Patreon Inc, said.

The Menlo Park, California-based start up was founded by serial entrepreneur Sam Yam and Jack Conte, a musician.
