Elon Musk has unveiled his plan to summarize news events on his social media platform X using xAI's chatbot, Grok.

Musk told the tech newsletter Big Technology that he plans to use AI to mix breaking news and social commentary around prominent stories, present the compilation live, and allow users to explore the stories further via chat.

The X engineering team announced Friday that the AI-generated news summaries, which will appear in the app's For You section, will mostly rely on user tweets and not on third-party news articles and only Premium subscribers will be able to read them.

Elon Musk Plans to Use Grok For AI News Inside X

Elon Musk noted that conversations or tweets on X will mostly be the core of Grok's summaries, relying solely on social posts and not at article text.

"It's summarizing what people say on X... Definitely needs to do a better job of displaying relevant posts, including, for example, the TIME post that links to the article," the X owner told Big Technology.

Musk said each news summary will be generated after Grok analyzes "tens of thousands of X posts." According to Bloomberg, this new feature, named "Stories," does not cite any news outlets at the moment. However, Musk noted that better citations are on the way.

Since news is often talked about on X, it can reportedly sometimes lead to Grok referencing to news outlets.

"As more information becomes available, the news summary will update to include that information... The goal is simple: to provide maximally accurate and timely information, citing the most significant sources," the tech billionaire told Big Technology.

The initiative reflects Elon Musk's broader vision to transform news presentation using AI. However, Musk acknowledged the challenges inherent in this endeavor, particularly around citation accuracy and preventing misinformation.

Grok's current functionality includes showing a running list of headlines and integrating social reaction into its summaries, but the maker of the chatbot, will have to sort out issues like citation and hallucination. Grok is owned by xAI, an AI startup also owned by Musk.
