Ford Motor Company has issued an urgent recall affecting nearly 43,000 small SUVs due to potential gas leaks that pose a fire hazard.
The recall encompasses specific models, including Bronco Sport SUVs from the 2022 and 2023 model years and Escape SUVs from 2022, all equipped with 1.5-liter engines.
According to documents filed with US safety regulators, the issue originates from cracked fuel injectors, which can lead to gasoline or vapor accumulation near ignition sources, heightening the risk of fires. Despite the severity of the problem, the recall remedy, as disclosed by Ford, does not involve directly repairing the fuel leaks.
ABC News tells us that Ford has reported five under-hood fires and 14 warranty replacements of fuel injectors related to this issue. However, there have been no reports of crashes or injuries thus far.
The company expressed confidence in the effectiveness of the recall repairs, stating that the new software will trigger a dashboard warning light, allowing customers to stop the vehicle and arrange for service safely.
Furthermore, Ford intends to extend warranty coverage for cracked fuel injectors, ensuring that affected owners receive replacements promptly.

NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) documents provided by Ford indicate that the problem occurs in only about 1% of the affected SUVs. NHTSA has pledged to closely monitor the recall's performance using field data, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring consumer safety.
Furthermore, Ford has recently issued recalls for improperly applied quarter glass panels to the roof and child-safety locks on the driver-side rear doors of the 2023-2024 Ford Bronco. In January, Ford recalled 112,965 units of its F-150 vehicles due to rear axle hub bolt issues.
