More Americans trust former President Donald Trump's trade approach than President Joe Biden's, according to a recent survey by YouGov.

Based on the poll released Friday, Trump's approach to foreign trade received a 42 percent approval rating, 11 percent higher than Biden's 31 percent.

More Americans Disapprove of Trade Policies of Joe Biden Than Donald Trump

The survey also shows that 36 percent strongly or somewhat disapprove of Joe Biden's trade policies, while 28 percent said the same about Donald Trump's policies.

The survey also reveals that Americans' opinions on trade engagement and tariff taxation vary. While some advocate for increased foreign trade, others lean towards decreasing it. Similarly, opinions on tariffs on foreign goods are divided, with some advocating for increases while others prefer decreases.

Republicans tend to support decreasing trade and increasing tariffs more than Democrats and Independents, although there is no clear consensus even among Republicans. Historical data shows a modest increase in support for raising tariffs since the 1950s.

Currently, two-thirds of Americans believe increasing tariffs on foreign goods imported into the US generally leads to price increases. However, a significant portion of those favoring tariff increases are willing to accept higher prices for American consumers.

Raising Tariffs

While some Americans believe that raising tariffs would benefit the US economy overall, they are also concerned about the impact on affordability and variety of goods.

Additionally, opinions vary on which countries the US should impose tariffs on. Some advocate for tariffs on all countries, while others prefer targeted measures against specific countries with unfair trade practices.

The survey also highlights differing views between Republicans and Democrats on the purpose of tariffs. Republicans are more supportive of tariffs for national security and domestic industry growth, while Democrats prioritize protecting foreign workers from human rights abuses and safeguarding the environment from unsafe manufacturing processes.

The YouGov poll was conducted between February 27 and 29 among 1,000 American adults. The survey's margin of error was 4 percentage points.
