Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company owned by Alphabet Inc., has received approval from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to expand its driverless service into Los Angeles and parts of the San Francisco Peninsula. 

Despite facing opposition from city and county officials, Waymo is set to deploy its Waymo One service in these new areas, marking a significant milestone in its expansion efforts.

Waymo Now Approved to Operate in Los Angeles

The approval from the CPUC comes after months of controversy and pushback from various stakeholders. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and San Francisco and San Mateo County officials expressed concerns about the safety and impact of Waymo's driverless vehicles on city streets. 

However, Waymo spokesperson Julia Ilina emphasized that the company also received support, with 81 letters of endorsement from advocacy groups and communities, including those focused on anti-drunken driving, disability rights, and pedestrian safety.

In a recent post on X, Waymo described the commission's approval as a "vote of confidence in our operations, which paves the way for the deployment of our commercial Waymo One service in LA and the SF Peninsula.'

Waymo's journey to launch its driverless service in Los Angeles has been met with both challenges and progress. The company began testing its autonomous driving program in the city last year and sought approval from state regulators earlier this year. 

Despite facing criticism about potential road disruptions and safety issues, Waymo asserts that its vehicles are safer than human-driven ones, citing data showing lower rates of injury-causing crashes.
