In a collaborative effort, Microsoft announces that it will join forces with NAB and Communications and Information Technology Training (CITT) to fortify Victoria's small business sector against cyber threats while nurturing cybersecurity talents at TAFE Victoria.

The Student and Small Business Cyber Risk Project initiative receives backing from the Victorian Government and pairs TAFE students with industry mentors to conduct cybersecurity assessments for small businesses, aiming to combat the escalating cybercrime landscape.

"In many cases, taking a few simple steps can be enough to protect against 99% of cyber threats. It's been great to be involved in this unique and highly scalable program, which is contributing to strengthening our nation's cybersecurity defences," said Mark Anderson, the National Security Officer of Microsoft Australia/New Zealand

The program's success now prompts a call for more participants, with plans to enroll 200 new students in 2024 and expand nationally within two years, reflecting a substantial investment and alignment with Victoria's cyber strategy and Digital Jobs program.

Notably, Microsoft and NAB's involvement underscores the significance of industry collaboration in bolstering cybersecurity readiness, echoing sentiments on the imperative nature of such initiatives amid escalating cyber threats.

"As Australia's largest business bank, we feel a deep responsibility to support the small business sector," said Sandro Bucchianeri, the Chief Security Officer of NAB.

The program's impact manifests in success stories like Bravo Careers, illustrating tangible outcomes of enhanced cybersecurity awareness and proactive measures adopted by small businesses following comprehensive risk assessments.

Through cybersecurity skills, even the Australian government could help itself evade cases of data breaches. For now, however, the focus is on small businesses. More programs could follow suit.

The initiative embodies a proactive approach to cybersecurity education and small business resilience. Microsoft reflects a robust public-private partnership model to foster a safer digital ecosystem.
