Red Alert in Two Cities of China

Xian, the capital of Shaanxi province, raised a red alert on Wednesday, signaling the expectation of severe pollution until Friday. Mandatory emergency measures have been implemented to mitigate emissions, including urging the public to use public transportation and encouraging businesses to adopt flexible work arrangements.

Similarly, Yinchuan, the capital of the Ningxia region, initiated similar measures on Tuesday afternoon to reduce emissions of exhaust pollutants by over 20% while ensuring that enterprises maintain their regular operating conditions.

In anticipation of moderate pollution until Friday, the city has imposed restrictions on industrial production, specifically focusing on critical sectors such as power stations, petrochemicals, chemicals, metallurgy, and cement plants. Enhanced pollution controls have been implemented within these industries.

Heavy Industries Temporarily Halted Due to Pollution

In Xian and Yinchuan, various activities that contribute to pollution have been temporarily halted. It encompasses the discontinuation of earthwork and demolition operations at construction sites and the suspension of spray and paint work.

Furthermore, the production and transportation of bulk materials using heavy-duty trucks at concrete plants have been put on hold. Coal processing, stone-cutting, and mining activities in both cities have also been temporarily paused.

The restrictions on using high-emission vehicles, including diesel vehicles, have also been expanded, and residents are urged to avoid idling their cars.
