Harrison Ford wants to do it. Steven Spielberg doesn't want to replace Harrison Ford. Lucasfilm hasn't definitively said no to the idea. All attention may currently be on "Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens", but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy recently hinted they might turn their attention next to the "Indiana Jones" franchise.

Speculation continues as fans expect Harrison Ford to reprise his iconic role as the globe-trotting adventurer and archaeologist in a fifth installment of Indiana Jones. With Ford currently busy promoting his latest film, Star Wars VII, in which he reprises his iconic role of Han Solo, and director Steven Spielberg currently filming his latest project, "Bridge of Spies", nothing has been set in stone yet on the future of Indy 5. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kennedy revealed that they're still busy focusing on current projects like Star Wars VII, which is their top priority for now. They have contributed a few story ideas on an Indy sequel, but there simply isn't enough time for all the studio bosses to sit down together with Spielberg and Ford, and discuss how to move forward. After Star Wars VII shows in theaters worldwide would there be an opportunity to discuss Indy 5.

Despite this uncertainty, Spielberg is definitely sure that he doesn't want to replace Ford. In his interview with Screen Daily, Spielberg unequivocally says Indiana Jones is so iconic that nobody else can ever step into his shoes but Harrison Ford. When asked why he wants to go back to the world of Indiana Jones, he says "because there are more adventures out there than films". For his part, Ford tells Entertainment Weekly without hesitation that he'd love to do another Indy movie.

Indiana Jones enjoys a cult following, although the last installment, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" disappointed some fans. The fourth movie made it look like Shia LaBeouf, who plays Mutt Williams, Indy's son, will eventually step up and replace his father. Since Ford is already in his 70s, speculation that he might be replaced if the franchise were to continue or get a reboot is not too far-fetched. One persistent rumor is that Chris Pratt ("Jurassic World", "Guardians of the Galaxy") would move forward with the franchise as the new face of Indiana Jones, but Spielberg seems to have quashed that one.
