Upon the announcement of the Final Fantasy VII Remake's episodic nature, Square Enix was forced to placate fans as the backlash of the announcement swept the Internet with many fanboy grumblings and promises for boycotts.

When the announcement of the episodic nature of the remake was released, many fans felt as if it will completely ruin the game, apparently expecting an exact 1:1 copy of the original, but with better graphics. But as previously stated in an interview with Dengeki Online (via Kotaku), Tetsuya Nomura (lead character designer of the original FFVII) and Yoshinori Kitase (original director of the game) revealed that the Final Fantasy VII Remake has always been intended to be "bigger than a single release." and explains that there is already so much content packed in the original 3 disks of the game that if they were to take the content and try to cram it in one game while adding all the new features, it would be much too big for a single release and they would have to cut out content, something fans of the original game mike take offense to.

Despite this, many fans still felt negatively about the decision, prompting Kitase to make a post on the official Square Enix blog detailing his stance. In this post, he reveals that the remake is not just a remake, but a completely new game that would further explore the setting of Midgard, and "to expand the original story and turn it into an epic experience" for the fans of the original and newcomers to the series alike. He also reveals that the trailer was a means to tease the sheer scope of the remake, and that the reason they took so long to make the remake was because of technological constraints, and ends his post to reiterate that they simply can't pack the remakes with the same density as the originals while sticking to a single release.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake is set to be available on the PlayStation 4. There is still no news about a release date or pre-order as of writing. Recently, the remastered re-release edition of the original game, originally released for the PC, was released on the PlayStation Store for $15.99, and is available to play on the PS4. This was possibly released to commemorate the release of the remake's trailer.
