'Aquaman' director James Wan is a serious fan of the comic books. He is speculated to begin production on the superhero's standalone film after finishing up 'The Conjuring 2'. Producer Charles Roven revealed that work on the screenplay has just begun.

According to Den of Geek, director James Wan may most likely work on the upcoming standalone film for the King of Atlantis after he wraps up on 'The Conjuring 2'. It was reported that he is currently in London for principal photography of his latest supernatural horror flick starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Fermiga as real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Wan is also attached to direct Sony's 'Robotech' film.

Producer Charles Roven revealed that Wan is a serious Aquaman fan. It was reported by Cinema Blend that Roven debunked rumors of the screenplay being written over for several months past. He said that they have just begun to write the script.

Roven admitted, "We're very early days. We're just starting with the screenplay. [James Wan is] making The Conjuring 2 now, so he's had his hand in the creation of let's just call it a working document from which to write. But he's directing that film [and] he's got his hand ever so slightly in the development, but he's really gonna throw himself into it after he finishes shooting Conjuring 2." He added that they may begin production for 'Aquaman' once he finished up 'The Conjuring 2'.

Jason Momoa, best known for his role as Dothraki warrior Khal Drogo on HBO's 'Game of Thrones', is set to play the titular superhero in the upcoming standalone film. According to Collider, his portrayal may just be a grittier version of what fans of the DC character are used to.

The fictional superhero's early days in mainstream media depicted him as wholesome, comical, and weaker in comparison to other characters. DC attempted to rehabilitate Aquaman's image in later comic books making him edgier and more powerful. One of the more modern takes on the King of the Seven Seas depicted him as a serious, brooding unseated king and fallen hero.

'Aquaman' is a science-fiction adventure film scheduled to be released on July 27, 2018. It will be directed by James Wan of 'The Conjuring' and 'Furious 7' fame. The film's script is currently being written.
