Electronics and cars can be a hazardous combination, but Google aims to ease the friction between the two by adding a system that will determine whether a user is driving a car or not and disable apps that could distract drivers. Personal injury attorneys in Tampa let us know that around 25% of accidents are caused by distracted driving related to electronic devices.

Google has been known to be the most friendly to users who are constantly on-the-go. Creating systems like in-dash navigation with Google Maps and text-to-speech SMS reading, the tech company- most famous for it's massive search engine- has recently been placing much emphasis on providing solutions for drivers through their apps and systems.

The latest system created by Google for drivers is a system filed April 7th of last year under the US patent number 9,0937,125 according to Android Police. The patent, credited to Mohammed Waleed Kadous and assigned to Google, uses a combination of both positional determination (figuring out where a person is seated in a vehicle) and motion detectors to determine with a variable degree of probability whether a person with a Google wearable device is driving or just riding shotgun.

Patently Mobile further elaborates how Google's new system will judge motions of a device wearer. A person's motion will be determined as that of a driver (e.g., by performing an act of driving such as turning a steering wheel, moving a gear shift, etc.) or a passenger.

The patent of the system is now published in Google's list of patents. The application of the system will primarily be to disable certain functions of drivers while they are in the act of driving such as receiving emails, text messages and social media notifications. This will in turn create the driving experience a whole lot safer for drivers with mobile and wearable devices.

Considering that this is merely a patent application, it does not hold as proof that the technology will be released anytime in the near future. However, it does connote that this will be something that will most likely be happening through Google.
