Netflix has reportedly made an announcement that "Longmire" Season 5 will be the last for the series. Though this is certainly not welcome news to its loyal fans who have worked long and hard for the show's renewal for the past two seasons, the news can play a positive role for the series.

Even the most loyal fan cannot argue that the show's storyline has been somewhat dragging since Sheriff Longmire executed Barlow Connally for murdering his wife in Season 4. Now given a deadline, perhaps the writers can come up with fresher and innovative storylines before the series comes to an end.

Meanwhile, "Longmire" Season 5 will have one-hour long episodes upon its return. This was confirmed by Lou Diamond Phillips who plays Longmire's best friend, Henry Standing Bear, in the series. He said, "With an additional 20 minutes, we can let moments breathe and round out the characters and it's a much more cinematic experience episode to episode."

This should be great news for the supporting cast as they will have a chance to be in the spotlight and their individual storylines be explored without sacrificing the time needed to focus on the title character according to Ecumenical News.Phillips revealed that many scenes revolving around the secondary characters ended being edited out.

"Longmire" Season 5 will also be able to tell its story without being held back by network TV restrictions now that the series is in Netflix. The coming season is said to be darker than past seasons with regards to its theme and tone.

According to Day Herald, there are unconfirmed reports thatNetflix will release "Longmire" Season 5 on September 2016. All episodes will be released at one time so that will be more than enough to make up for the long wait.

Tony Tost, one of the show's writers, revealed in a Twitter post that he has started working on the script for "Longmire" Season 5. His December 7 tweet read, "Re-watching Longmire Season 4. All psyched up and waiting to head back into the writer's room to start working on the script for Season 5 tomorrow!"

"Longmire" Season 5 will continue right where the previous season left off. Longmire was having a romantic moment with Donna Sue Monahan which was interrupted by an intruder who crashed right to his door.
