Netflix announced in October that it was picking up "Longmire" Season 5. This time, the series will come with longer episodes to be able to give more focus on the show's other characters.

Much of last season was focused on Walt Longmire (Robert Taylor) and his personal struggles. This was because several scenes involving some of the supporting cast ended in the cutting board due to the limited running time and to maintain the story pacing.

In an interview, Lou Diamond Phillips who plays Longmire's best friend, Henry Standing Bear, confirmed that each episode of "Longmire" Season 5 will now be hitting the one-hour mark. He stated, "With an additional 20 minutes, we can let moments breathe and round out the characters and it's a much more cinematic experience episode to episode."

He further explained that with the show's previous network, A&E, each episode was limited to just 42 minutes. Netflix has given them more leeway with the time  and theme. By extending each episode to one hour, "Longmire" Season 5 in its entirety will be over three hours longer than Season 4. According to Ecumenical News, this will give the other characters a chance to be in the spotlight and their individual storylines to be explored without sacrificing the time needed to focus on the title character.

"Longmire" Season 5 will also be able to tell its story without being held back by network TV restrictions now that the series is in Netflix. The coming season is said to be darker than past seasons with regards to its theme and tone reports Yibada.

The series is based on Craig Johnson's "Walt Longmire Mysteries"  novels which revolve around Walt Longmire, a county sheriff who investigates crimes in his jurisdiction. "Longmire" Season 5 should provide answers to the previous season's cliffhanger, which saw Henry being taken away by police officer Mathis. Meanwhile, an intruder made an entrance in Walt's home at a very inconvenient time.

There is not much known about "Longmire" Season 5 for now as its renewal has just been announced by Netflix. However, if the previous season's release date is to be based on, the new season should be out on September 2016.
