Lead actor and film producer Michael Fassbender will play two roles in the upcoming 'Assassin's Creed' Movie. Though there will be entirely new characters, the movie will be in the same universe as its video game counterparts. Reports say if the movie goes well, a franchise may be well on its way.

The 'Assassin's Creed' movie was recently given the greenlight to go into production. According to a report by Realty Today, Michael Fassbender who plays the younger Magneto in the X-Men franchise, will play two lead roles in the movie. This came from a tweet by Assassin's Creed Head of Content Azaiza Aymar stating the Irish-German actor will play the present day Callum Lynch and his ancestor Aguilar.

There are mixed reactions from fans though as Aymar also confirmed that Altair, Connor and Ezio will not be in the movie. But, fans should still expect to see some familiar faces in the upcoming film adaptation of the world renowned game.

Games Radar notes that even though the leading characters in the game are not in the movie, the movie itself is in the same universe as the video games. This means the story will be in line with the Assassin's Creed Universe, but with entirely new characters.

This may prove to be a wise decision by the producers as most game-to-movie adaptations have failed except for the Resident Evil franchise which has almost the same formula as the upcoming Assassin's Creed movie.

Fans can expect a DNA memory storyline which is one of the unique themes of the video game. Abstergo industries will play a huge role in the movie and the Animus machine will be a major item since the two time periods will be featured.

If the movie goes well, a franchise may be underway. According to Crossmap, Fassbender said, "We'll see how the first one does, but that's the idea. The material and the landscape is so rich, there's definitely enough there for a franchise."

The movie is currently filming in Valleta, and is scheduled to be released on December 21, 2016. Until then, fans should wait for upcoming trailers and teaser posters.
