A third edition of the Samsung Gear VR is reportedly slated to be released in 2016. Rumors say that Samsung partnered with Oculus to create a universal standalone Gear VR for either desktops or mobiles.

The announcement was revealed by Samsung mobile chief JK Shin in an August interview with CNET. Adding to that, a Korean source claims that the next Gear VR would be a standalone device for the PC.

However, Samsung's partnership with Oculus for creating the third Gear VR edition might signal a universal Gear VR for mobiles, reported Phones Review. The report added that when marketed properly, a universal Samsung Gear VR for mobile phones could become a popular best-selling device for 2016.

Shin said the following statement during the Samsung Gear VR's announcement last year: "The Samsung Gear VR goes far beyond expectations of how mobile technology can be used to consume content, and is a powerful representation of the progressive innovation of the Gear series. We are pleased to have partnered with Oculus VR to bring this incredibly immersive mobile content experience to consumers."

The first Gear VR was launched to the Galaxy Note 4 dubbed as the First Innovator Edition in December 2014. It worked together with Galaxy Note 4 to provide an interactive and immersive gaming experience to the user according to Android Headlines' report.

Following the Galaxy S6 release, Samsung unveiled the Second Innovator Edition of the Gear VR. The second Gear VR edition was an improved version of the first. It also used the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge as a screen to create a 3D gaming environment.

The Samsung Gear VR operates using native sensors such as accelerometer, gyro sensor, and proximity sensor. Aside from playing games, users can watch movies and videos using the VR device according to Samsung.

The field of virtual gaming is expanding and many companies are jumping aboard to create their own VR devices. As 2016 draws near, Samsung needs to up its game in order to release the next-gen VR headset and stay on top of the VR market.

Samsung has not revealed whether it is making a standalone Gear VR for PC or a universal Gear VR for mobile. The company is expected to make an announcement of the upcoming Gear VR in the Oculus Connect 2 event on September 25.
