As virtual reality technology gains popularity nowadays, future gaming consoles like the rumored PS5 and Xbox Two might abandon their hardware makeup and turn into set-top boxes integrating VR tech. PS5 could be the last PlayStation console while Xbox Two may not have physical media.

Pocket-lint reported that Microsoft and Sony are not done with their console generation updates. This was revealed by former Microsoft Xbox head Robbie Bach in an interview with Geekwire. Bach also believes that an Xbox Two and a PS5 will soon hit the market.

On the other hand, Twitch Boss Emmett Shear said in a report by Crossmap that Sony will purportedly launch a PS5 but it will look very different. The report claimed that PS5 will supposedly be the last console in the PlayStation lineup, adding that PS5 might integrate Project Morpheus VR while the Xbox Two will have Microsoft HoloLens VR.

Regarding Xbox Two's design, Bach says, "I think there will be another generation. What the console looks like is a very interesting question. Does it have a physical media? Probably not, so how does that look? Is it just a game box or is it more?"

Bach declared that he does not know how the next Xbox would look like. "These are really interesting questions, and the teams [are] going to have to wrestle with those. That next generation will be a whole new game."

As mobile phones are turning into game consoles, traditional consoles are being threatened in the consumer market. Shear says that the best way for consoles to survive is to turn them into set-top boxes like the Apple TV.

Win Beta reported that in the current console market, PS4 is leading in sales with Xbox One not too far behind. Xbox One is still gaining popularity as major game titles make their way to the console.

However, Shear said that the average lifespan of a console in the market is five years at least. With the emergence of new technologies, this lifespan will be shortened. Microsoft and Sony have to figure out a way to prevent their consoles from dying out in the consumer market.
