After his box office success in "Mission Impossible 5: Rogue Nation," Tom Cruise will return for more action as "Jack Reacher 2" is set to start filming this November. The full cast has yet to be confirmed but the rumored leading lady is said to be "How I Met Your Mother" star Cobie Smulders.

The Wrap first came out with the news that Smulders, who played S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill from the blockbuster juggernaut "The Avengers," will take a break from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and go to another action franchise.

The sequel is said to be based on Lee Child's 18th century novel "Never Go Back," also reported by Screen Crush. The story begins when former military cop Jack Reacher heads to the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. There, he is set to meet his commanding officer named Major Susan Turner. However, when he arrives, he finds Turner arrested.

As it was written on the book description, "And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal even to think about."

In the first instalment, Rosamund Pike starred as Tom Cruise's female counterpart. In "Jack Reacher 2," Cobie Smulders is rumored to play a character named Danika. However, her details are still in the dark.

Smulders has not yet confirmed the rumors, while one of her representatives told The Wrap that "there's nothing to talk about."

"The Last Samurai" director Ed Zwick will be taking the reins of the movie after Christopher McQuarrie backed out because of his previous conflict of schedule during his filming of the last "Mission Impossible," according to Cinema Blend.

Despite its domestic sales disappointment, 2012's "Jack Reacher" still killed in the worldwide box office with $218 million on a $60 million budget.

The upcoming "Jack Reacher 2" to be released in late 2016 is labelled by many critics as Tom Cruise's challenge if he can make a blockbuster hit aside from "Mission Impossible." And with "How I Met Your Mother" star Cobie Smulders on board, he might just be able to do so.
