For those who were left hanging and curious about the epic Battle of Axanar, the significant turning point in the war against the Klingon Empire, a new yet unofficial movie is currently in the works. Titled as "Star Trek: Axanar", the upcoming film will give the fans a closer look to what really happened at Axanar, and how Captain Garth achieved victory in the said encounter.

To stir the excitement of the "Star Trek" fans, Robert Meyer Burnett, who is producing the movie and just recently took over the director's chair, has teased some information regarding the forthcoming film. While "Prelude to Axanar" and the notion of "The Four Years War" were absolutely inspired by the FASA sourcebook for the STAR TREK role playing game, we're sticking as close as we can to the events depicted in the original series and not referencing the RPG or any of the books and comics that have been written," he told Io9. "Aside from Garth and Ambassador Soval, all of our characters are completely original, as are the situations presented in the film".

Yahoo notes that the event was briefly mentioned in the original "Star Trek" series back in 1960s, but the battle itself was never featured solely on screen. The event was also reportedly cited in the original series' third-season episode, "Whom Gods Destroy," which followed battle winner and Starfleet captain Garth of Izar.

According to the filmmaker, "Star Trek: Axanar" will be providing the awesome starship combat the franchise's fans have been requesting but will prioritizing the story of its characters first."But make no mistake, the film is, first and foremost, about our characters. The very last thing I'm interested in is making a pew, pew, pew STAR TREK movie," he explained.

As per Wired's report, the forthcoming film follows the story of the ultimate battle in the war between the Klingon Empire and the Federation. Set roughly two decades prior to Captain Kirk's ruling over the Enterprise, "Star Trek: Axanar" pits Commander Kharn (not Khan), a new Klingon character, against the leading Federation commander, Garth of Izar.

The project is currently funded through a series of Kickstarter campaigns. It is slated to hold a third crowdfunding campaign soon, to raise badly needed funds to complete the production. It is currently in pre-production stage now with a target filming date of October 2015.

"Star Trek: Axanar" is slated to be released in the first half of 2016.
