Thirty years after "Top Gun" has made its way to the big screen, the long-awaited sequel to the ever-quotable 1986 fast-mover flick is finally prepping for take-off.  Producer David Ellison has recently confirmed that "Top Gun 2" is now in the works, with Justin Marks working on the screenplay. Though he confirmed that the iconic character, Maverick, will be returning as well, it is unclear whether Tom Cruise will be reprising the said role.

The long-running rumors of the overdue "Top Gun" sequel have recently been confirmed by Skydance Production's head honcho, David Ellison during a press tour for "Terminator Genisys"."Justin Marks, according to Vulture, is writing the screenplay right now," he said. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy [have] turned into today."

Though the script of "Top Gun 2" is not finished yet, Ellison, as per BGR's report, mentioned the new scriptwriter is currently working on a plotline that explores the end of classic dogfighting in the age of drones. "It is very much a world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we're actually going to produce," Ellison explained.  "So it's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today are all fun things that we're gonna get to dive into in this movie."

The CEO has also added that the upcoming film has something big in store for Maverick's role. However, he did not confirm whether Tom Cruise, who portrayed the character in the 1986 movie, will be reprising his role in the long-awaited sequel. Despite this, a lot are speculating that Cruise will be returning in the franchise, considering the stardom he has achieved after appearing in the said film.

Meanwhile, Marks is known to have recently penned "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li" as well as Jon Favreau's upcoming Jungle Book starring Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray and Idris Elba.
