Toy Story 4 is already proving to be a much stranger Toy Story film than anyone anticipated. It's been revealed that the fourth Toy Story movie won't be a direct sequel to the third, which ended with the sentient toys given to a new owner- a young girl- while their original owner, Andy, was all grown up and had moved off to college.

The new Toy Story film will be a romantic comedy, allegedly, and will have far less to do with the actual humans that watch over the toys. With this in mind... who's going to be the main character in Toy Story 4? One rumor claims that it'll still be Woody, and that Little Bo Peep, who disappeared in the last Toy Story film, will be replaced with a new character who'll serve as Woody's love interest. Backing up this rumor is the news that Tom Hanks may already be attached to the film.

However, given that the film is meant to be more tangential to the franchise (it's been stated rather directly that "the film is not a sequel"), it's also possible that the filmmakers will stay away from the original trilogy characters, and created a new toy (or two new toys) to feature as the romantic leads.

Pixar is bringing on a ton of new talent to the latest Toy Story film. Toy Story 4 will be directed by Josh Cooley and John Lasseter, who's been the mastermind behind Pixar's success for decades now. The film will be written by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, who previously collaborated on the film Celeste and Jesse Forever. The story for the fourth film (which may not may even be called Toy Story 4, given Pixar's insistence that it's not a straight sequel) is being handled by the Pixar braintrust, to ensure it comes out as wonderful as the last three Toy Story films.
