Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" book series is about to follow his other books' paths as Sony Pictures plans to make movie version of the Roland Deschain-led series. It was even reported that the franchise can potentially compete with J.R.R Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" film adaptation.

Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital found a possible multi-medium franchise in Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" book series. Sony Pictures boss admits that he is excited about the project as he is a fan of King's works. "The Dark Tower" book series is Stephen King's answer to the J.R.R. Tolkien's famous "The Lord of the Rings" novels.

Stephen King has also expressed his excitement about the crossover of his book series to the big screen. Lots of his books have already been translated to films including, "Carrie", "Stand By Me", "The Shawshank Redemption", "The Shining", and "It."

"I'm excited that The Dark Tower is finally going to appear on the screen," King said. "Those who have traveled with Roland and his friends in their search for the Dark Tower are going to have their long-held hopes fully realized. This is a brilliant and creative approach to my books, " he furthered.

Sony Pictures and MRC were reportedly resurrecting the script penned by screenwriters Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner in 2010.  The movie adaptation however, has not found any director or lead actor yet. Previously, J.J. Abrams and Ron Howard have expressed their interest to lead the film remake's production but both did not pursue their plans.

"The Dark Tower" follows the story of Roland Deschain, the last living member of the gunslingers. The book is a mixture of horror and fantasy, two genres that Stephen King has already mastered.

Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital are currently cooking up a huge movie franchise, eyeing Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" book series. Despite limited official details about the project, it is already seen successful even challenging the achievement of the film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings."
