Star Wars: Rogue One was the final film to get a major burst of new info from this weekend's massive Star Wars Celebration. And now, thanks to that celebration we know the very first details on the first of several planned Star Wars spinoffs.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, who also directed last year's Godzilla reboot, Star Wars: Rogue One will follow a team of mercenaries sent to steal the plans for the original Death Star. Or, as Edwards officially stated it: the story "will revolve around a rogue band of resistance fighters who unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring new hope to the galaxy."

Several other new details about the film have been revealed- that it will take place betwen Star Wars: Episode III and Episode IV, and that the film will be much darker and more brutal than the regular numbered Star Wars films. The tone of the movie has been compared to a war movie- could Rogue One be Saving Private Ryan in space?

According to Tech Times, the first trailer for Rogue One showed a forest environment with a TIE fighter flying above the trees. Eventually, the camera reveals the Death Star, floating ominously in the sky. The clip is also narrated using classic dialogue from Alex Guiness as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars film.

Several casting announcements point to new details about the film. Felicity Jones, who was recently cast in the lead role, will likely play one of the mercenaries sent in to recover the Death Star plans, although Jones has alluded to using a pink lightsaber in the film. However, it's know yet known if she actually will, or if Rogue One will feature any Jedi characters at all, given their low numbers between the third and fourth Star Wars episodes.

Star Wars: Rogue One (or, as its new title was recently revealed, Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One), will premiere in theaters on December 16, 2016.
