Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is headed our way next summer, but the film that started it off- Man of Steel- won't be getting a sequel for an extremely long time. DC's mapped out all its superhero sequels through 2020, and an official Man of Steel sequel (presumably, titled Man of Steel 2) isn't there.

Instead, we may be getting something very different- a prequel, that takes us all the way back to Krypton, to focus on Jor-El, Superman's father (played by Russel Crowe in Man of Steel). While nothing concrete has been confirmed by WB, Crowe himself is extremely excited about the project- as read in Screen Rant, he claimed:

"What sparked my interest, once I saw how Zack was creating Krypton; it always sort of went through my mind: I'd like to see what made Jor-El Jor-El, what made him and Zod legendarily or folklorically friends. What split them apart? The philosophy that spilt them up. So, a prequel."

Jor-El features into Man of Steel in a major way, establishing Superman's backstory (and the villain, General Zod's) in the early part of the film, and reappearing later on to give Superman guidance as he fights to protect Earth from evil Kryptonian invaders.

This may have something to do with another Man of Steel spin-off in the works: a series titled Krypton that's coming to the Syfy channel. Krypton is also a Man of Steel prequel set on the superhero's home planet, but it's already been revealed that the show will focus on Jor-El's father, not Jor-El himself. Because of that, it seems unlikely Crowe would feature in the series in a major way (although he could appear as a cameo).

With the recent reveal of the first trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, anticipation for Warner Bros' DC Universe is at an all-time high. The trailer shows our first real glimpse at the film's new version of Batman; played by Ben Affleck, he sports a robotic suit of armor (but also a regular Batsuit), a digitally disguised voice, and seems extremely distrustful of the Man of Steel.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice premieres on March 25, 2016.
