One of the bigger surprises from this year's Comic-Con was the annoucement of "Skull Island," a new film based around the "King Kong" series, to be made by Legendary Pictures.

And, of course, Legendary Pictures is the same film studio responsible for this year's remake of "Godzilla." Which begs the question - will we be seeing a "Kong Kong vs Godzilla" film anytime soon?

Sources tend to vary on the subject. KpopStarz claims that the newest rumors about Legendary indicate they're shooting to make "Godzilla" into an expanded universe franchise, much like Marvel's "The Avengers." That means more monsters need their own solo films, so that they can eventually come together in group movies every so often. And King Kong might be the right ape for the job.

KpopStarz also has a quote from Legendary about the upcoming "Skull Island:"

"Previous works have touched on the island, but staying and exploring this mysterious and dangerous place offers Legendary the opportunity to take audiences deeper inside this rich world with a style and scope that parallels other Legendary productions."

The film is set to hit theaters November 4, 2016, so any future films that might pit Godzilla against King Kong are a long way away.

A piece in MoviePilot casts doubts on a possible crossover, citing one very important reason - in the latest "Godzilla" film, the great green dinosaur is over 300 feet tall. Kong is nowhere near that size. In order for them to fight on an even playing field, one of the films is going to need some serious doctoring.

But you never know - Hollywood loves its sequels, and it's not completely absurd that it might make Kong significantly bigger than usual in "Skull Island."

SlashFilm, however, posits that the film might be based on books or theme park rides that have been spun off of the original "King Kong" film. In that case a re-sizing might be a little more difficult (as, in the original, he was nowhere near Godzilla's size).

But a "King Kong vs. Godzilla" film would be so much fun it doesn't even matter. Check back soon for more updates on the potential movie monster crossover.
