"The Originals" will be back for its sophomore season with the introduction of new werewolves, witches, and characters with secrets. Esther and Mikael's love story will be delved upon, while Klaus and the others will face several challenges in New Orleans.

Executive Producer, Julie Plec warns that "The Originals" will introduce new challenges to the vampires of New Orleans as the show returns on October 6. Plec has stated in an interview that, "New Orleans has already been shaken to its core," and additionally warns that being a vampire in the area "will come at a price."

According to Breathe Cast, Plec shared that the show will return four months after the events of season one. The article recalls the finale leaving Klaus to stage Hayley's death and sending the newborn baby Hope with his sister Rebekah for the baby's safety. When the show returns, "The vampires have been basically decimated and those that remain have been exiled out of the (French) Quarter," says Plec. Breathe Cast adds that the witches will make an alliance with the stronger werewolves to capture the city.

Breathe Cast also reports of the addition of Daniel Sharman to the cast. Sharman will be playing the role of Caleb, a "delightfully obnoxious, charming and wildly handsome" individual who will apparently be Davina's new love interest who allegedly has a secret.

Aside from Caleb, IB Times also says a new character named Ingrid will be introduced. The article describes her as a woman who is desperate to be with child. Ingrid's storyline will allegedly be linked with Esther's, as Joseph Morgan (Klaus) theorizes that Esther will be seeking revenge. Hallels also mentions Mikael returning, though controlled by Davina, but according to the producers, Mikael and Esther will be unaware of the presence of the other until the season finale.

A "badass werewolf" will also be joining the cast, adds Hallels. Colin Woodell will be portraying the werewolf named Aiden, who will be seen in the fourth episode. Aiden will apparently make "dangerous alliances," shares Hallels.

The witches of New Orleans will also see a new member, as Sonja Sohn will join the cast as Leonore, adds the Hallels article.

Wet Paint also has Plec confirming the earlier announcement at the San Diego Comic-Con about a crossover between "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Originals." Plec stated that the crossover will happen on the first half of the season, but stopped short at revealing which character will be crossing over.
